New on DVD: 'Max Payne,' 'Saw V'

DVD releases are starting to pick up, but there's still more quantity than quality today. Not even lead Mark Wahlberg seems excited about the convoluted thriller "Max Payne"(unrated, $29.98), while "Saw V"(R, $29.95) sees the bloody horror franchise limping along weakly.

If nothing else, the gory, garish "Repo! The Genetic Opera"(R, $19.98) is a memorable oddity—we can guarantee you'll never see another futuristic musical starring Paris Hilton and Paul Sorvino.

There are some rousing moments in the inspirational sports movie "The Express"(PG, $29.98), about Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis.

And tweens may enjoy either the sci-fi adventure "City of Ember"(PG, $29.99) or the timely high school doc "Frontrunners"(unrated, $29.95), in which kids from Stuyvesant compete for student body president.

If you're currently shaking your head and thinking, "they sure don't make ‘em like they used to,"you'll want to pick up either the Douglas Sirk melodrama "Magnificent Obsession"(unrated, $39.95) or the documentary "MGM: When the Lion Roars"(unrated, $29.98), about Hollywood's Golden Age.

Also out today is a collector's edition of "Ghost"(PG-13, $12.99) and "The Notebook Gift Set"(PG-13, $29.98)—though be aware that neither is heavy on new extras.

Turning to TV, we've got the short-lived vampire series "Moonlight" (unrated, $39.98), and the second season of Ira Glass's "This American Life"(unrated, $19.98).

"The Powerpuff Girls"celebrate their tenth anniversary with a complete series collection (unrated, $59.98), Mario Batali and Gwyneth Paltrow take a culinary road trip in "Spain . . . On the Road Again"(unrated, $39.95), and we're up to the sixth volume in the British spy series "MI-5”(unrated, $79.98).

Finally, for all those stuck at home with inauguration envy, there's "President Barack Obama: The Man and His Journey"(unrated, $19.99).
