Battlestar Galactica heads for the finish line on Sci-Fi Network

"Battlestar Galactica" cast member Kate Vernon says she gets a strange feeling as she watches the final episodes of the popular Sci-Fi Network series tick off.

She plays Ellen Tigh, a recurring character who was killed in season three but returned for this season to be revealed as the fifth Cylon, which for the fans was a huge twist.

"Over the years, they would call me, I called them, and I'd go shoot all of these episodes, and now it's over," Vernon told the Daily News. "There's sort of a ghost memory - my phone should ring and I should be going back."

But she's not, nor is anyone else on the show.

The final 10 episodes of "Battlestar Galactica" began airing Fridays at 9 p.m. last month and will wind up March 20. The show revolves around a group of humanity's last survivors and their attempt to find a new home while running from the Cylon enemy.

When she started out on "Battlestar," Vernon was only supposed to appear on three or four episodes, but then the part kept growing.

Now it's over.

"There's a strange feeling," she said. "If you lose a limb, there's a ghost limb feeling. ... I've got a ghost limb. I've got ghost phone.

"There's definitely some grieving going on because the show was such an incredible show to be a part of," she said.

Vernon has been on other series before. She had recurring roles on "Falcon Crest" and "Who's the Boss?," and appeared in films such as "Pretty in Pink" and "Malcolm X."

None, however, had the fanatic following of a sci-fi program.

"The sci-fi community is an amazing community," said Vernon, who attends fan conventions. "They're devoted and, oh boy, they're passionate."

Vernon can't share specifics of how the show ends, or even what's in store for her character now that the Cylon secret is out.

"My character was just getting all wound up, and to creatively let go of this wonderful role of Ellen Tigh is a big deal. As an actor, I'm very fulfilled," she said.

"None of us saw the ending coming," she added. "I would just say, erase your mind of any expectations and really watch the show with an open mind. So much is to be revealed."
